World War II would see the creation of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1943. Even more controversial was the inclusion of African American women in the WAC as members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. This unit left for Europe in February of 1945 and was led by Major Edith Adams. The “Six Triple Eight” was given what was believed the impossible task of rendering order out of the U.S. military’s chaotic undelivered mail system. To everyone’s surprise, Adams and her unit achieved that task in half the allotted time. So let’s learn the amazing story of this gifted leader and her resourceful unit of over 800 black women.
